England hit stride as Rooney sparks grandstand finish
A team placed below New Caledonia and Chad in Fifa’s official world rankings gave England pause for thought last night before a rush of late goals allowed Wembley to relax in the knowledge that a third successive win in Group Six was secure. Close-up: Paul Manning
Like many of the Team GB athletes who won gold at the Beijing Olympics, Paul
Manning has pledged to lay his reputation on the line at London 2012. The
difference is that, while Bradley Wiggins, Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton

and boots; it should be finished by then," he says.

For a select few in the poshest seats, however, the tournament in eight years’ time is about to assume paramount importance. The Football Association want to stage it in England for only the second time in history, and preparations for mounting a winning bid are about to enter a significant stage.
Tony Smith: Out of the frying pan into the fire for ‘our’ blue-chip leader
It was not exactly love at first sight for Tony Smith and the country where he was destined to make his home and his career. Smith, the Australian-born coach who departs tomorrow for the rugby league World Cup in his original homeland, does so in charge of the England squad. It is not an outcome that would have seemed very likely to him when he arrived at Workington 12 years ago.
